What we collect
When you apply for membership, register for a workshop, contact us or subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the details you give us: your name, email address, phone number, and whatever you write in the form.
If you create an account we also store your profile — your stated experience level, making interests and any bio you add. We record the IP address and browser of form submissions solely to detect abuse.
What we do with it
- Respond to your enquiry or application
- Manage your membership and workshop bookings
- Send you the newsletter, if you asked for it
- Understand which of our programmes are used, in aggregate
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not build advertising profiles.
Where it lives
Your data is stored in a managed PostgreSQL database provided by Supabase, protected by row-level security policies. Applications and member details are readable only by CoMakers Africa staff accounts — not by other members, and not by anonymous visitors.
How long we keep it
Membership and booking records are kept while your membership is active and for six years afterwards, which is the period we may need them for accounting. Unsuccessful applications and contact messages are deleted after two years. You can ask us to delete your data sooner.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter using the link in any issue. Email hello@comakersafrica.org and we will respond within 30 days.
Cookies
We set one cookie, and only after you log in: it holds your authentication session so you stay signed in. There are no advertising or tracking cookies on this site, and no analytics cookies either.
Visitor measurement
Apart from the blog counts described below, we do not measure visitors. No third-party analytics of any kind runs on this site.
Blog views and likes
Articles on the blog show how many people have read them and how many liked them. This is counted by us, on our own server, and shared with nobody.
To count a reader once rather than once per refresh, we take your IP address, combine it with the article and a secret key we hold, and store only the resulting one-way fingerprint. The IP address itself is never written down, the fingerprint cannot be turned back into it, and for views the fingerprint changes every day. We do not use cookies for this and we do not record your browser or device.
We also record two things about where a view came from: the name of the site that linked to you here (for example “linkedin.com”, or nothing at all if you typed the address), and the two-letter country code the request arrived with. We never store the full link you followed, because a link can contain a search you made or a private group you belong to.
None of it is tied to your account, even if you have one, and none of it is used to build a profile of you or shown to anyone outside CoMakers Africa.
Comments
If you comment on an article we store the name you type and what you wrote. Both are public once we approve them, so please do not put anything in a comment you would not want a stranger to read. We do not ask for an email address and you do not need an account.
Comments are held until someone here has read them. To stop one person flooding the queue we keep the same one-way fingerprint described above, and nothing else about you.
Ask us and we will delete your comment. Email hello@comakersafrica.org with roughly where and when you posted it.
Children
Accounts are for people aged 18 and over. Younger makers take part through supervised sessions arranged with a parent, guardian or school, and we hold their details only for the duration of those sessions.
Changes
If we change this policy materially we will say so on this page and update the date above.
