New members almost always gravitate to the laser cutter. It is fast, it is precise, and it makes a satisfying noise. It is also, in terms of what it will teach you, close to the least useful place to start.
Here is the order we actually recommend.
**1. The hand tools**
Unfashionable, and the fastest route to competence. If you cannot cut a straight line with a hand saw, mark out accurately, or drill a hole where you meant to, no machine will fix that. Machines amplify precision; they do not create it.
**2. The drill press**
The first machine most people should touch. It teaches workholding — which is the single concept that separates safe machinists from injured ones. If you learn to clamp properly here, you carry it to every other tool in the building.
**3. The 3D printer**
Not because printing is difficult, but because it forces you to learn CAD. Once you can model a part, every other digital machine becomes accessible. The printer is the cheapest, most forgiving way to find out whether your model is wrong.
**4. The laser cutter**
Now. It is genuinely easy to operate, and the real skill is in file preparation and material knowledge, both of which you have been building. The danger here is not the beam; it is putting the wrong material in the bed. PVC in a laser cutter produces chlorine gas. Learn the material list before you learn the settings.
**5. The CNC router or mill**
Last, because it combines everything: workholding from the drill press, CAD from the printer, file preparation from the laser, and material knowledge from all of it. It is also the machine with the least tolerance for a mistake.
**The pattern**
Each step teaches something the next one assumes. Skipping ahead is possible and people do it, but they tend to plateau — capable of running one machine, unable to reason about a new one.
Book an induction and start at the drill press. It is not glamorous. It works.
